Supports higher education service-learning and community service programs that address community needs through local service projects. In FY 10, approximately $7.3 million may available to fund up to 20 awards to individual institutions or consortia. Institutions can submit more than one application, as long as projects are distinct.

Single investigator Cottrell College Science Awards (preliminary proposal required 9/15, proposal target date 11/15) provide $35,000 ($10,000 match required) for tenure-track individual investigators in their first 3 years of positions in astronomy, chemistry, or physics departments that do not offer doctoral degrees. Cottrell Scholar Awards (applications due 1st business day in April) provide $75,000 to tenure-track assistant professors in bachelor's & PhD-granting departments of astronomy, chemistry, and physics. Multi-investigator awards available for past awardees.

Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program:
Notice seeking proposals to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, for students, faculty, and institutions, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. (National Science Foundation (NSF); Multiple Directorates)
ACTION:
Preliminary Proposals are required and due by March 29, 2010. By invitation only, Proposals are due September 30, 2010. Approximately $10.8 million is available to support 18 awards. Colleges and universities are eligible to apply.

NSF Voluntary Cost Sharing:
The proposal to eliminate voluntary cost sharing, as recommended by the National Science Board, will be implemented "soon." Details to follow when the decision has been made.
Motorola Antes $7.5 Million in National STEM Funding:
The Motorola Foundation has announced that it will increase its 2010 giving to U.S. science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education programs to a total of $7.5 million in Innovation Generation grants. In an extension of the Obama administration's Educate to Innovate campaign, Motorola's Innovation Generation grants will provide funding in three areas:
Innovation Generation University Grants will support hands-on competitions, seminars, and design competitions for undergraduate- and graduate-level students at select universities, with maximum grants of $50,000 each. Applications are due by March 1, 2010 (by invitation only).

Funding results: FY2010 Thru November 30, 2009:
As of the end of November, the University has submitted 104 proposals for support of University-based projects. To date, 91 awards have been received – some of which are from proposals submitted during the previous fiscal year. The commitment of funds in these grants and contracts to date is $11.0 million. It should be noted that some of these awards are for projects that extend over more than one year, but the formal commitment for funds is only for the current project year.
