Environmental Waste Management: - How do I decide? (Office of Environmental Management)

The Environmental Management Department at Missouri State is responsible for maintaining compliance with the environmental regulations including proper handling and disposal of solid, hazardous, and bio-hazardous waste.  All solid and liquid wastes generated on the campuses of Missouri State University are subject to determination as possible hazardous or bio-hazardous waste.  This section provides guidelines for basic determinations for many wastes.

Environmental Reseource Center (EPA:  - Web-based Environmental Compliance Tool (for Colleges)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has a new Web-based compliance assistance center that provides comprehensive environmental compliance assistance and pollution prevention information for colleges and universities. The center was developed by the National Association of Colleges and University Business Officials with support and funding from EPA.

The Web site makes it easier for school officials to learn more about applicable environmental regulations and ensure a safe and sustainable environment for their students, faculty, and staff. The online center provides information on topics including waste management, air and water resources, drinking water, and public safety. Viewers can find out what types of campus activities are regulated by EPA, see how best to comply with environmental regulations, query federal enforcement and compliance data, learn how to apply for federal grants, and e-mail comments to EPA on regulations under development.

Biosafety Program: - General Biosafety Training (Berkeley lab)

This training is an introductory course on Biosafety that covers definitions of biological and biohazardous materials, risk groups, biosfatey containment levels and controls, and the role of the Institutional Biosafety Committee. It includes an overview of the federal laws and implementing regulations, the use of chemicals within laboratories, and general campus facilities. It advocates the careful use and disposal of chemical waste whether for research or general usage.

Laboratory Procedures:Laboratory Survival Manual (University of Virginia)

Faculty and staff conducting educational and research activities involving chemicals have the "right to be informed and trained" on the chemical hazards present in their work area. The responsibility for apprising workers of the necessary precautions to take when using or handling hazardous materials rests with the Supervisor, Laboratory Manager or Faculty Member in charge.

Safety and Health Topics: - The Laboratory Standard (U.S. Department of Labor)

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), recognizing the unique characteristics of the laboratory workplace, has tailored a standard for occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in laboratories. This standard is often referred to as the "Laboratory Standard".

Workplace Safety and Health: - Chemical Hazards and Exposures (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. NIOSH is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services.

A list of academic degree programs and research training opportunities, supported by NIOSH through university-based Education and Research Centers (ERCs), in the core areas of industrial hygiene, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, and occupational safety, plus specialized areas relevant to the occupational safety and health field.
