Occupational Health and Safety Program

In accordance with federal regulations and the University policy, all covered persons are required to enroll in the Occupational Health and Safety Program (“OHSP”) or provide certification that they are participants in a similar program at their home institutions.   Covered persons include faculty, staff and students, and bona fide volunteers who will be working with or have a reasonable expectation of exposure to animal tissues, fluids, secretions and/or excretions (collectively referred to as “exposure to animals”) while involved in research and/or education projects at on or off-campus locations.

Enrollment and participation in the OHSP includes the following phases:

  1. Completion of the Hazard Assessment Guide by a covered person’s supervisor, and the Initial Medical History and Health Questionnaire by a covered person.
  2. Medical Screening at the Taylor Health and Wellness Center will involve review of the covered person’s medical history (e.g., allergies to animals), duties that may result in exposure to animals, and the need for protection or prophylactic (e.g., tetanus and rabies inoculation) measures.
  3. Annual renewal and updates on exposure to animals is required when the hazards’ change, e.g., different species.
See the Hazard Assessment Tool for a complete listing of animal hazards

The following forms used in the OHSP are as follows: (The forms are PDF documents)

Students whose only exposure to animals is in a for-credit laboratory activity and others involved in specified activities are not covered by this Policy as described in Section 1.D. of the SOP.   In addition enrollees can request a waiver for undergoing the medical assessment as described in the SOP Section 3.C.(1)(b).

Questions about enrollment and participation are to be referred to the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs (6-5972).
