Registration for CITI Courses: (Instructions)
Proceed to https://www.citiprogram.org/default.asp. (opens in a new window)
Basic Course First time users: (Returning users will logon using existing username and password.)
- Select Register for the CITI course.
- On the Select your Institution panel, choose Missouri State University from the “All Others” dropdown menu. Click the Submit button.
- On the Select Your User Name and Password screen choose a username, password and reminder phrase. Passwords must be between 8 and 12 characters long. Click the Submit button.
- Provide the demographic information on the CITI Registration Page. Street address information is not required. Click the Submit button.
- Click View/Update your Learner Group.
- Select the appropriate Group (as listed above) for the type of research to be conducted. (Note: Upon completion of one group, you can complete modules in the other group if you believe it will be of benefit to your training.
- Question 1 Select the group appropriate to your research activities.

- Biomedical Investigators: Register for Group 1.
- Social & Behavioral Researcher: Register for Group 2.
- Do not choose the IRB Reference Resource. (Intended only for IRB Committee members; not faculty or staff)
- Question 2 Select the group for which you have previously completed an institutionally approved Basic Course in the Protection of Human Research Subjects.
Choose I have not previously completed an approved Basic Course.
For those who have already completed the CITI Basic Course and are seeking re-certification, choose your appropriate group, either Social and Behavioral or Biomedical.

Click Continue
- Click Continue. You will notice that under the heading, “Human Research Curriculum", your group is Social & Behavioral Research (Stage 1. Basic Course)
- Click Go back to Learner's Main Menu
- On the Learners Menu panel, click Grade book link to begin the CITI course.
For those who are seeking re-certification, select “Refresher Course (Required; Incomplete). The grade book will open with the first module appearing as a hotlink. After completing the quiz for each module, the next module will appear as a hotlink. Continue through the modules that appear in the grade book.
Please note that you can logout at any time, and then re-enter at the point where you left. Users are encouraged to logout when they have completed a module, rather than within a module.
- When all modules have been completed, the Missouri State University link at the bottom will take you to your completion certificate.
- Print two copies of the Completion Certificate (Do not print the grade book)
One copy is to be attached to the IRB Application form, and the other copy is for your records.
NOTE:
Print the Certificate report for your records and include with submissions to the IRB.
Do not print the Grade Book! This will not be accepted as a valid completion of the training.
The Office of Sponsored Research and Programs will have a database record of your successful completion of the course.

Renewal of Certification
University faculty, staff and students who have been certified as having completed human subjects protection training are required to undergo refresher training every three years.
Refresher training can be completed by selecting one of the following routes:
- For those who have completed the CITI Basic Course, recertification can be achieved by completing the CITI Refresher Course.
- For those who have completed the NIH training three years or more prior to July 1, 2006, recertification must be accomplished by completing the CITI basic course. This is required so that future recertification can be accomplished through the CITI Resfresher course can be achieved by completing the CITI Refresher Course.
Note: Researchers will take the refresher courses through CITI every three years to remain compliant.
