HIPAA for Security Training:

Welcome to Missouri State University Health Insurance and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Security Training.

Security and privacy are not new concepts. The federal HIPAA Security Rule requires additional training, new policies and procedures for the Security Rule portion of the law. If you have not completed the HIPAA Privacy Training, please go back to the Health Information Privacy webpage to access and complete the Privacy training prior to the Security training. See further details on the HIPPA Security Training.

The HIPAA Research Training Module (an online training program) is for those who will conduct research involving protected health information (PHI). The Research Training Module is a supplement to the HIPAA Privacy and Security Training Module, training. You are expected to complete the latter before you begin the HIPPA Research Training Module.

Reprint Certificate:

If you have already completed the above training, and need a copy of your certificate, you can Reprint your Certificate for the HIPAA training. In the left Navigation column, under Self Help, choose Duplicate Certificate, enter your login information and choose the course to which you require a reprint of your certificate.

What is HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, (HIPAA) Privacy Rule establishes the conditions under which protected health information may be used or disclosed by covered entities (such as Missouri State University) for security purposes. The general requirements ensure Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability of personal health information for covered entities, such as Missouri State University. This became law April 20, 2005.

These general requirements applies to electronic Protected Health Information that a covered entity;

  • Creates
  • Maintains
  • Receives and
  • Transmits

It protects against reasonably anticipated threats or hazards to the security or integrity of information.

Protects against reasonably anticipated uses and disclosures not permitted by the privacy rule.

Ensures compliance by the workforce.
