Grants.gov is the government agencies primary source for the submission of grant proposals. When a grant application package is submitted through Grants.gov, a confirmation screen will be received by the sender as well as four emails advising of the status of the sent submission.

The possible submission emails range from;

  1. Submission Receipt
  2. Submisison Validation or Rejection with Errors
  3. Agency Retrieval, and
  4. Agency Specfic Tracking Number Assignment (only if grantor agency assigns a tracking number)

Once you have submitted an application, you can check the status of your application submission. You can identify your application by CFDA Number, Funding Opportunity Number, Competition ID, and/or Grants.gov Tracking Number.

All Principal Investigators (P.I.) must be aware of the submission deadline for grant proposals so that there application will be processed in a timely fashion. Recently the NIH announced that the error correction window for Grants.gov and NIH processing times will be reduced from Five  (5) Business days to Two (2) business days. This rule of thumb should be applied for grant submission for all grant agencies to ensure successful submission.

A PDF document from Grants.gov entitled, "What to expect after submitting your Grant Application Package" (PDF document; opens in a new window) goes into greater details on each of the four submission emails.

As part of it's efforts to ensure compatibility of Adobe PDF grant applications with their system, Grants.gov has made available an Adobe Versioning Test Application Package, that will verify if you have the correct version of Adobe Reader installed on your computer. We encourage all P.I.'s verify through the Adobe Versioning Test Application Package. If an error occurs, visit the Grants.gov Download Software Page to get the compatible version.
