Calculating Salary and Fringe Costs related to Externally Funded Projects

The University requires that fringe benefits for University employee compensation be included in all budgets developed for grants and contracts. The university has negotiated the following fixed rates:

FY2010:

  • Faculty/Full-time Employees -  30.3%
  • Part-time Employees              -    7.65%
  • Graduate Students                  -         0%
  • Student Workers                      -         0%

Fringe benefits for full-time faculty and staff and faculty administrators include Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, Retirement; and various insurances provided by the University (accidental death and disability, dental, life, long term disability, and medical and dental).

The salary and fringe requested for full-time employees to be paid through a grant or contract are based on;

  1. Each person’s annual salary, and
  2. The percent time dedicated to the research/project.

Funding for University personnel is to include both salary and fringe benefits in the proposal budget. The fringe rates are effective from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2010.

FY2009:

  • Faculty/Full-time Employees -  29.2%
  • Part-time Employees              -    7.7%
  • Graduate Students                  -       0.1%
  • Student Workers                      -       1.1%

Fringe benefits for full-time faculty and staff and faculty administrators include Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, Retirement; and various insurances provided by the University (accidental death and disability, dental, life, long term disability, and medical and dental).
