Signup for SMARTS:

To begin to access SMARTS;

  1. All faculty, staff and students who are working on behalf of a faculty research advisor must fill out the SMARTS Keyword Form.
  2. Once the form has been successfully completed, the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs (OSRP) will email your profile information to allow you to begin using the funding notification service.

The information from the SMARTS Form can be searched to find other researchers who may share your research, service or project interests.

To begin using the SMARTS service:

  1. Click SPIN Matching And Research Transmittal Service. An electonic Research Administration (eRA) Portal screen will appear in a new window.
  2. Click the Login tab.
  3. Use your given profile information to log into the Grants Management System.
Please note that if you forget either your username and/or password, you can have the system send you those information, by clicking on the Get Profile option. This is found on the first screen of the eRA Portal. Just follow the steps to get your information.
  4. The next step is to click the Find Funding link. The “Find Funding” page will appear. Click the SMARTS link and view the Preferences options on screen.
  5. Next, click on Keywords to view your selected keywords you entered via the SMARTS Keyword form. You can update the keyword information by selecting the general topic areas that match your interests. Do not check the boxes as you will receive every entry within that general area.
  6. For each general topic chosen, keywords will appear to the left. Choose your keywords, click the Select button and your selected keywords will appear at the bottom of the screen. (Use the CTRL key to highlight several keywords).
  7. Click the Save button to complete your choices.
  8. Click the Log Out button to exit from the application.

Faculty and staff currently employed at Missouri State University are eligible to use SMARTS.

Students currently enrolled at Missouri State are eligible to use SMARTS provided an e-mail message is sent from their faculty advisor indicating a request. The faculty advisor will then receive a confirmation of the request from the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs. [SponsoredResearch@missouristate.edu]

What is the SMARTS Module?

SMARTS as an electronic matching and funding opportunity notification system, provides investigators with a direct and targeted electronic link to comprehensive, current, and available research funding information - both nationally and internationally. The investigator profile information is collected via forms in GENIUS and used for matching with the SPIN database. Matching is conducted on a daily basis and programs are automatically emailed to individual researchers.

How to Find Funding:
Upon entering the Portal, and selecting Find Funding, the user may select to access either SPIN or SMARTS.

Instructions on the use of SPIN are detailed in the software Help file. The above instructions focus on the setup and use of SMARTS matching. Because Missouri State university subscribes to SMARTS, you will be able to access the SMARTS portion of Find Funding. Contact OSRP (SponsoredResearch@missouristate.edu or 417-836-5972) for further details on using either SPIN or SMARTS. (see image below).
